When a nucleus has too many neutrons, it will spontaneously change a neutron into a proton. This transformation is called beta decay, because when the decay occurs, a beta particle, or electron, is emitted. Shielding from beta particles can be achieved also by a thin layer of cloth or metal. Beta particles also have a short range; a typical 500-keV particle can travel about 10 feet through the air.
